Our statement in response to Jonathan Gornall's report 'Was Message of Sudden Infant Deaths Study Misleading?' to be published on 2 Dec 2006 in the BMJ
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) funds the Care of the Next Infant (CONI) scheme, a support programme for bereaved parents.
FSID acknowledges that there is controversy and difficulty in ascertaining causes of death when a baby dies suddenly and unexpectedly. This is why FSID has been campaigning since 2000 for a thorough investigation of every infant death, without any preconceptions, to try to find out as much as possible about the causes leading to death.
The analysis of data from the CONI scheme, and the interpretation of the results of that analysis, are the responsibility of the authors of the paper*. Any paper published as a result of that analysis in a reputable journal such as the Lancet is subject to independent peer review as a further safeguard.
