In January 2007 a beautiful little girl named Maude died in her sleep during her afternoon nap - the cause of her death unknown.
Maude's mother was a regular visitor to Mumsnet, the mothers' networking site. When they heard of Maude's death they decided to do something in her memory and raise money for FSID at the same time. Out of this was born "A Mile for Maude".
A website was created by Jane Exworthy inviting people to plan their own one-mile walk in their area. A mile was the chosen because it is a manageable distance for people of all ages. The idea spread and soon over sixty walks were planned and registered on the site, in the UK and overseas - we even had some in New York, New Zealand and Australia!
The walks took place on the same day, during Save a Baby Month, on Saturday May 12 2007, and participants carried pink balloons in Maude's memory. Click here to see view a gallery of beautiful photos from the walks.
Aside from the walks, the project expanded to include "pink balloon" themed merchandise including sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs and baby bibs. These are very attractive and still available to buy from the online "Save a Baby" shop. Click here to view what is on sale. All profits are donated to FSID.
Since May 2007, money from A Mile for Maude has been rolling in, with over £15,000 raised.
FSID would like to extend an enormous thank you to Jane Exworthy and all the mums and supporters who took part for making this unprecedented fundraising phenomenon happen.
