This year we launched "Mile in Memory". We asked people all over the country to take part in a one-mile sponsored walk on 17th May in their area in memory of a loved one.
The event was a fantastic success with over 60 walks happening all over the country. Thank you to all those who took part.

Below is information we gave for this year's event:
Coordinate a walk in your area or take part in an existing one near to you. Either way, it is a simple, effective and fun way to raise money and awareness for our cause that everyone can get involved in, whatever age or ability.

Coordinate your own walk
Rally your friends and hold a Mile in Memory walk in your local area. We can supply all the advice and resources you need. You walk can be organised in eight easy steps:
1. Order your "walk coordinator's pack" here or by emailing fundraising@fsid.org.uk or calling 020 7222 8003.
2. Choose a route local to you of roughly one mile in length. If it is public land then seek permission from the council, and if it is in a park contact the park owners.
3. Decide on a meeting point and time for your walk.
4. Contact us by phone (020 7222 8003) or on email (fundraising@fsid.org.uk) to inform us of your walk so that we can list it on these pages.
5. Send out invitations (found in the organiser's pack) to anyone you think might be interested in taking part (contact us if you need more copies of these) with details of the walk.
6. Contact as many people as you can about getting involved. Put posters up in local shops and communal areas to recruit more people.
7. Send out sponsor forms to your walkers or direct them to this page where they can download them (see right). Participants can send their sponsor money directly to us, so you don't need to spend time collecting in the money.
8. Order balloons and stickers which you can give out to participants on the day.
This is the basic shell of a plan. However, there are many other things you can do with your walk. How about doing it in fancy dress? Or contacting the local press to get them to cover the event? We can help with advice on how to write press releases.
Although we would like you to recruit as many people as you can, you can even do a walk with just two people, or even completely solo! Just remember: we are here to give as much help, support and advice as we can so get in touch!
Promote your walk on Facebook
'If you would like to promote your walk on facebook you can join the event that we have created and invite all your friends by clicking here. Or, when you are logged on to facebook, simply click on 'Events' and search for 'Mile in Memory' then click 'Add to my Events'. This will enable you to invite all of your friends along (and allow them to invite theirs if they accept your invitation). You can also post information on the wall about the times and locations of your own walk and afterwards you will be able to share photos.'
Take part in an existing walk
Another option is to register to take part in a walk already planned.
Click here to view a list of walks already planned around Britain.
If there is no walk listed for your area so far get in contact with us to register your interest and we will contact you if one gets organised near you in the future (fundraising@fsid.org.uk or 020 7222 8003).

Other "mile" activities
So far we have only mentioned walking. However, your mile in memory is by no means restricted to walking. How about:
A mile-long treasure hunt or a mile with something on your head; a mile of skipping, rowing, swimming, dribbling, singing, carrying weights, on roller skates or in fancy dress? There are dozens of ways you can get involved and you can make them as challenging or easy, classic or exotic as you like!
Get in touch now to see how you can take part in this year's Mile in Memory to celebrate someone you loved.
