Mayhem in Morocco

Mayhem in Morocco

In March 2007, Sue Wilding, Paul Burrows, Shirley Conway and Linden Kirk-Yates, all from Lancashire, took part in Trek Sahara for FSID.

Sue recounts their epic adventure here, mishaps and all:

The trip began with a baptism of fire: my luggage went missing at Casablanca and did not re-appear until an hour before the return journey. I had to do a quick dash to the market in Marrakech for a toothbrush, a disposable camera and some underwear. I then hired a sleeping bag off a taxi driver that we met en route and I borrowed all my shorts and t-shirts. Luckily I had travelled in my walking boots so I still had those. The one consolation was that when my bag did materialize the only washing I went home with was underwear!

And so to the trek. What an absolutely stunning and scenic place! The terrain fluctuates between barren landscape, enormous sand dunes, areas with bushes and terrains full of fossilised creatures.

I had done a lot of training (walking to and from work) so I didn’t find the toughness too bad, and I didn’t get any blisters.

On some nights we slept outside. It was amazing. The sky was so clear; I’ve never seen so many stars. There was even a lunar eclipse on the first night. It was an experience that we will probably never have again.

My husband and kids missed me so much that they don’t want me to do another one, but I’d love to! It really was a unique expedition, like nothing I have ever done.

The team raised a grand total of £8000. FSID would like to thank all four trekkers for their support to our cause.
