Allergic reactions and SIDS

Although the causes of SIDS are believed to be multi-factorial, evidence suggests that abnormal allergic reactions may be involved in some cases.

Following the observation that the levels of tryptase, a protein released when the immune system activates, were high in some sudden infant deaths, Dr Andrew Walls from Southampton General Hospital plans to devise tests to identify infants at high risk of allergic reactions.

He will also investigate whether these proteins can cause tissue damage and whether they are present at increased concentrations in SIDS babies.

The results will be analysed to see if there is any link between activation of the immune system and known environmental risk factors for SIDS, such as exposure to passive smoking.
